Layoffs at Illinois auto plant reflect the threat EVs pose to jobs in the auto industry
Recently, the carmaker Stellantis announced that it will be closing its factory in Illinois, effectively laying off over a thousand workers. The company has claimed this decision is due to the microchip shortages throughout the pandemic as well as the rising costs of producing electric vehicles, which have become increasingly prevalent in the auto industry. While Stellantis has promised to take steps to connect the laid off employees with new opportunities, the United Autoworkers Union (UAW) has expressed its frustration and disagreement with the decision.
