In 2022, there were large gains made with unionization efforts in the retail and service industries. The Service Employees International Union won hundreds of elections last year and added thousands of members. Furthermore, the United Food and Commercial Workers organized thousands of workers as well. This wave of labor action in these industries demonstrated a widespread desire for better compensation as well as a greater input on the workplace decisions, and the harsh economic conditions of the pandemic provided motivation to pursue these grievances. Despite this uptick in organizing in 2022, business leaders are not concerned that this trend will persist into the new year.
