Railroad workers push for resolution that includes paid sick leave, citing recent train derailment as evidence in favor of such safety reforms
In early February, a train derailed in Ohio causing residents to evacuate and dangerous chemical exposure to the area. Railroad workers and unions have stated that this accident highlights the necessity for safety reforms within the industry, including their demand for paid sick leave. They claim that the deteriorating conditions of the US railroads are directly associated with the decline in rail workers and their working conditions amongst a rise in profits for the rail companies. Furthermore, rail workers have expressed frustration with the Biden administration and Congress for imposing a new contract agreement last fall that did not include measures to address their concerns with the disciplinary attendance system and safety risks. Recently, the railroad unions have begun a renewed push for a resolution that would include paid sick leave days, citing the need for rail companies to prioritize safety of its workers and the larger public as well.
