Layoffs in the tech industry shatter illusions of the industry and spur organizing efforts amongst some workers
As a result of the recent mass layoffs in the tech industry, many illusions about the industry have been shattered such as the perception that tech companies were immune to the volatility of the economy. In addition to this, the layoffs have spurred some workers to organize. In the past, there has not been a lot of unionization within the tech in due to the generous wages and benefits used to attract and retain talent. Workers are reconsidering their relationships with their employers now, which can be seen in the growing Alphabet Workers Union representing Google employees. Some labor leaders believe this may mark the start of a new wave of organizing, but the lack of precedent for collective bargaining in tech and the tight labor market may simultaneously slow organizing efforts.
