Employees will face layoffs as Google works to merge Waze with other map services
The popular mapping service Waze which allows users to crowdsource traffic data and update traffic information will face upcoming layoffs. Waze was acquired by Google in 2013, and Google has been working in recent years to merge Waze with Google Maps products. Waze currently uses its own separate advertisement system, and Google will be shifting Waze ads to use Google’s advertising monetization system. This makes various Waze jobs that are focused on advertising obsolete, and the majority of layoffs will occur in sales, marketing, operations, and analytics in the Waze advertising division. Alphabet, the parent company of Google, has also removed or downsided certain projects along with employee layoffs to cut costs.
