The United Farm Workers union has successfully organized five New York farms
The United Farm Workers union has successfully unionized five farms in New York, adding 500 new members to the union. The five farms include four orchards and a vegetable farm, and the majority of the employees are seasonal workers from Jamaica and Mexico. Workers decided to unionize due to poor housing conditions and stressful and high-pressure work environments. The union states their success would not be possible without the Farm Laborers Fair Labor Practices Act, a recent New York law that provides farm workers the state-protected right to unionize. The law also prevents farm owners from retaliating against workers who decide to organize. The union is hoping to unionize even more farms in New York in the future.
