Unions representing English school teachers agree to new contract with the government
Teachers’ strikes that have affected classrooms around England throughout the past year are coming to an end, as all four teacher unions agree to the new contract proposed by the government. The agreement raises wages by 6.5%, and the funding for the wage increases will not come from existing school budgets. The National Education Union, the National Association of Head Teachers, and the National Association of Schoolmasters/Union of Women Teachers successfully voted in favor of the deal this week, and the Association of School and College Leaders approved the measure in early July. The unions have stated that their needs are not fully met by the contract, and will continue to fight for greater pay and increased school budgets.
