The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh announces job cuts due to large budget deficits
The University of Wisconsin- Oshkosh will lay off 20% of its employees because of the school’s $18 million deficit. Some employees will be furloughed, while 200 administrative and non-faculty staff positions will be cut. UW-Oshkosh administration states that the budget deficit is due to decreasing state support for the University of Wisconsin System and lower student enrollment. The university became overly dependent on tuition revenue, and with fewer high school graduates attending colleges or universities, the university costs outweighed revenue. The total debt for the 13 University of Wisconsin System universities for the upcoming year is estimated to be $60 million, but it is not clear if other campuses will take similar action.
