Proposed bill by Wisconsin lawmakers would remove requirements for youth work permits
Lawmakers in Wisconsin have introduced a new bill in the state legislature that relaxes work permit regulations for 14- and 15-year-old workers. The current laws in Wisconsin require 14- and 15-year-olds to have parental permission and age verification from the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development in order to receive a work permit. Children must have youth work permits to be able to hold a job, and youth work permits can be revoked if the department determines that a child’s safety is in danger on the job. Lawmakers in favor of the bill state that the current laws are unnecessary and delay hiring and administrative processes for companies. Lawmakers who are against the proposed measure believe that removing youth work permit requirements makes it easier for companies to violate child labor laws without getting caught.
