Union organization in the United States is increasing largely due to graduate students and medical residents
Union organizing efforts in the United States have steadily increased in recent years, and thousands of workers have voted in support of organizing this year. Over 50,000 workers have participated in union organization this year, with significant numbers of university graduate students and medical interns voting in favor of organizing. Students at Duke, Stanford University, Johns Hopkins University, Dartmouth College, and the University of Chicago have all voted to unionize this year, and medical interns at Mass General Brigham supported unionization efforts as well. Students and medical residents chose to unionize because of low wages, long hours, and mediocre employee benefits. They are hoping that joining a union will improve future working conditions and set a standard for pay and benefits in colleges and universities and the medical sector.
