Michigan’s Ascension Providence Rochester Hospital hires contingency staff to continue operations while workers are on strike
Hospital staff at Ascension Providence Rochester Hospital in Michigan have gone on strike to protest against unfair labor practices and strained contract negotiations with Ascension management. The Office and Professional Employees International Union represents nurses and radio technologists at the hospital, and the union has filed numerous unfair labor practice claims against Ascension. The union claims that Ascension has not participated in good faith bargaining and has also threatened unionized workers. Ascension has denied these allegations, and the hospital has hired contingency workers to fill in for striking hospital employees. The use of contingency workers will minimize disruptions and keep the hospital open, and workers are hired from a staffing agency that specializes in staff shortages due to strikes.
