Teachers in Las Vegas schools have not been showing up to school, and a judge has ruled the absences as illegal strike action
Teachers in Las Vegas area schools have been absent during the first weeks of school and the absences have resulted in school closures. A judge determined that the teacher absences are considered strike action, and ruled that teachers must return to work as it is illegal for public employees to go on strike in Nevada. Teachers are taking strike action as contract negotiations grow more tense with Las Vegas school districts, and the inability of the two parties to agree has led to arbitration for further negotiations. If teachers continue to strike, they could face penalties such as jail time or termination and fines up to $50,000. The Clark County Education Association represents the unionized teachers and has stated that it will submit an appeal to the judge’s decision.
