Proposed bill in California would require a human truck driver to be on self-driving trucks
A California proposal is seeking to ban self-driving trucks over a certain weight limit from operating without a human on board the vehicle. The proposal comes at a time when self-driving trucks are coming closer to becoming a reality, with companies currently testing the safety of self-driving trucks on California roads. Various California lawmakers, labor unions, and truck drivers are in support of this proposal, stating that it will ensure safety on the roads, as well as protect truck driver jobs from becoming obsolete. There is widespread support for the proposal as many believe that the proposal invests in California workers and public safety. However, opponents of the bill state that companies will experience increased costs, and this could push them to leave California and move to other states without restrictions for self-driving trucks. The California governor has historically been pro-labor but is still considering the potential economic consequences of the bill before making a decision.
