Canadian union representing automotive workers reach an agreement with Ford
Ford narrowly managed to avoid strike action from the company’s Canadian workers, after proposing a new contract that successfully met the needs of workers. Canadian Ford employees are represented by Unifor, and the union represents over 18,000 employees in Canada. The planned strike action in Canada targeted manufacturing plants focused on assembling the Ford Edge car and the Lincoln Nautilus vehicles, as well as producing automotive engines. Unionized workers will vote on ratifying the new contract, and vote results are expected to be announced later this week. A new contract with Ford will be used as a guide for the union’s negotiations with General Motors and Stellantis. Unifor’s approach to negotiating with the Big 3 Automakers differs from the United Auto Workers’ strategy. The UAW in America is targeting all three companies at the same time and is striking at specific plants, while Unifor is negotiating more traditionally, and the proposed strike action would have been nationwide.
