UK train operating companies and RMT write memorandum of understanding
The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers has reached a tentative agreement with UK train operators, and the two parties have written a memorandum of understanding. The memorandum of understanding includes measures to backdate 2022 worker pay raises, and extend job guarantees until 2024. Workers will vote on the memorandum of understanding, and if it is approved, strike action will come to an end. The dispute between rail unions and train operating companies has lasted for almost a year and a half, and subways and trains experienced severe delays and stoppages during the Christmas holiday last year. Approval of the memorandum will halt strike action for six months, and it will be guaranteed that rail crew and service members will be working during the Christmas holiday this year. Negotiations and bargaining between rail unions and train companies at the local level will begin in February.
