Cruise, a General Motors company, lays off numerous workers as the company suspends driverless vehicle services
Cruise, a company owned by General Motors focused on driverless vehicles and a driverless ride-hailing service, announces layoffs that will affect dozens of workers. The company stated that it is shifting focus to its supervised driver services, and will revisit driverless services in the future. Cruise has dealt with recent safety issues and concerns after driverless vehicles have collided with pedestrians. Cruise’s driverless services are headquartered in San Francisco, and after the numerous collisions, the state of California revoked Cruise’s testing permits and the development of driverless cars. The layoffs will cut maintenance and charging crews, cleaning staff, and front-facing customer service employees. According to the General Motors third-quarter earnings report, Cruise has accumulated almost two billion dollars in losses this past year.
