Unionized employees at the Los Angeles Times walkout due to upcoming layoffs
The Los Angeles Times Guild represents over 400 unionized employees at the Los Angeles Times. The union staged a one-day walkout after the company announced significant layoffs earlier this week. The walkout was the first ever in the history of the Los Angeles Times, and the union took action because the announced job cuts could affect up to 20% of editorial staff. The Los Angeles Times Guild is seeking the addition of seniority protections for unionized employees, to reduce the number of long-term employees being affected by layoffs. Company management stated that the layoffs are due to the reduction in the 2024 operating budget, and the budget reduction can largely be attributed to the decrease in advertising revenue.
