Hollywood production studios and unions representing entertainment crew employees have begun negotiations for a new contract
Contract negotiations between various labor unions representing entertainment and media crew members and studios in Hollywood have started. Workers rallied this past weekend in front of entertainment studios demanding greater wages and improvements in working conditions. Unionized entertainment and media crew workers are either represented by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees union, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters union, or the Hollywood Basic Crafts union. The unions all together represent around 66,000 workers, including costume designers, camera operators, drivers, and other workers in the entertainment industry. The previous contracts between unions and production studios are nearing the end of the contract period, and the unions will join together when negotiating pension and health benefits with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers and will negotiate separately regarding other aspects. The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees represents the largest number of entertainment and media crew members and has stated that if a contract agreement is not reached before July when the current contracts end, the union is open to holding a strike authorization vote.
