Lawmakers in Central California will provide unemployment resources as major fruit produce company conducts layoffs due to bankruptcy
A fruit produce company in California, Prima Wawona, sent layoff notices to employees when the company filed for bankruptcy late last year. The layoffs will affect hundreds of workers in the area, and local lawmakers have proposed measures that will provide support and resources to laid-off workers. The resources include food, housing, assistance with unemployment forms, job training, and career-related counseling. Local lawmakers also allocated $7 million in funds to a nonprofit, La Cooperativa de California, to provide aid and resources to affected workers. Prima Wawona has been a major company in the Central California area for several decades, and it is one of the United States’ major producers of stone fruits. The company currently has over 5,000 employees, as well as numerous contracted farm laborers.
