Lawmakers seek health care and retirement protections for Steward Health Care workers
A coalition of Democratic Congress members, led by Senator Edward Markey from Massachusetts, has called on the U.S. Department of Labor to ensure that health care and retirement benefits for workers at Steward Health Care are safeguarded following the company's bankruptcy filing. Steward Health Care, which operates over 30 hospitals across the United States, announced plans to sell all its hospitals amidst bankruptcy proceedings. The lawmakers are concerned about the impact of the company's financial troubles on its nearly 30,000 employees, particularly the 10,000 based in Massachusetts who have already experienced delays in receiving their paychecks. The group, which includes Senators from Ohio and Pennsylvania as well as Representatives from Massachusetts, has urged the Department of Labor to oversee the protection of workers' benefits during the bankruptcy and any potential hospital closures or sales.
