Amnesty International, Sport & Rights Alliance oppose Saudi Arabia’s bid to host 2034 FIFA World Cup, citing high likelihood of human rights violations
The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), is set to vote on bids for the 2030 and 2034 World Cups in December. For the 2030 World Cup, the one bid is a combined bid between Spain, Morocco, and Portugal, and for the 2034 World Cup, Saudi Arabia is the sole bid. Amnesty International and the Sport & Rights Alliance have issued a statement recommending FIFA to halt the voting process on the World Cup bids, claiming that the bids did not sufficiently address how human rights standards would be met. In the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar, there were allegations that the country committed human rights violations against workers and hundreds of workers died during the construction of stadiums. Amnesty International and the Sport & Rights Alliance stated that if Saudi Arabia hosts the 2034 World Cup, large-scale and significant human rights violations will occur, fans will face discrimination and workers will be exploited. Saudi Arabia currently does not have minimum wage laws or worker safety standards.
