Workers stage one-day strike at San Diego hospital over layoffs
Alleging unlawful layoffs and stalled contract negotiations, more than 100 workers represented by AFSCME Local 3299 staged a one-day strike Tuesday at UC San Diego Health. The action comes after the university announced plans to eliminate up to 230 jobs, 103 of which are held by union members. The union argues the layoffs were imposed without proper negotiation, violating state labor law. UCSD Health maintains it followed all legal and contractual obligations. Workers say the cuts are especially egregious given the system’s recent financial moves, including multi-million dollar loans to outside hospitals.
