Maine Trust for Local News workers rally to expand their union
Reporters and staff at the Portland Press Herald rallied this week to push for a union expansion across all publications owned by the Maine Trust for Local News. The News Guild of Maine, already representing about 150 employees, is seeking to add roughly 50 more workers from the Sun Journal, The Times Record, and 17 weekly papers. Supporters pointed to wage gaps, job insecurity, and shrinking local coverage as reasons for the drive. The move highlights growing concerns about sustaining independent journalism in Maine amid industry cutbacks.
