California lawmakers reach deal with Uber, Lyft that would allow drivers to unionize
Lawmakers in Sacramento have reached a landmark compromise with Uber and Lyft that would let drivers unionize while still being classified as independent contractors. The deal pairs a union-backed collective bargaining bill with a measure supported by the companies to scale back costly insurance requirements, which they say drive up fares. Supporters argue the agreement will give hundreds of thousands of drivers a stronger voice on wages and working conditions while keeping rides more affordable for passengers. If passed by the legislature and signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, the package would mark one of the most significant expansions of collective bargaining rights in the private sector.
