47M Americans hit by food stamp cuts starting today
Temporary boosts to the funding of several federal programs end today. One of those programs is SNAP, or food stamps, which will leave 47 million Americans with less than a $2 per meal budget in the coming weeks and months. One in seven Americans receives assistance from food stamps, but even with the benefit many are still forced to turn to food pantries in order to have a well-rounded diet. The reduction in benefits is partially planned, through the expiration of stimulus funding, but partially due to Congress?s inability to come together and pass a farm bill. The lack of support for any iteration of a farm bill threatens the loss of even more aid, both for farmers and for Americans living in poverty.
