US labor union membership slips in 2024 to record low
In its annual release, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Tuesday that union membership in the U.S. had declined to a new all-time low of 9.9% in 2024, down from 10% the previous year. Despite the fall, government workers remained an anchor for unions, with a membership percentage of 32.2%, and union workers continue to earn more than their non-union counterparts. Many believe that the drop does not account for recent gains in union elections, emphasizing corporate attempts to put off contracts. Notable victories, such as the first unionized Whole Foods, indicate a growing interest in organizing. Moving forward, labor unions are expected to face more challenges as a result of the new Trump administration's initiatives.
