A new bill for New York City could mean the stop of AI hiring tools
New York City council members voted 38-4 on November 10th to pass a new bill that would ban AI in recruitment. This bill would ban employers from using automated hiring tools unless they could show in a yearly audit that the tool does not discriminate based on the applicant's race or gender. It would also force the makers of those AI tools to disclose more information about their tools and employers to give candidates the option of choosing an alternative process to review their application. Mayor Bill de Blasio has a month to sign or veto the bill. The mayor's office says that he supports the bill, but he hasn't said if he will sign it.
