After mass layoffs and workforce reductions, big tech companies hire low-paid foreign workers to fill empty positions
Recently, there have been mass layoffs at large tech companies such as Google, Meta, Microsoft and Amazon. In order to compensate for these massive workforce reductions, it has been reported that these companies have hired low-paid foreign workers to fill the roles of various highly specialized tech positions. Filings for H-1B visa applications to bring foreign tech workers to the US have been on the rise, which some critics argue undercuts the job opportunities for US citizens and legal permanent residents. It has also been reported that the big tech companies have hired lobbyists to pressure lawmakers into increasing the number of H-1B visas that are approved. Critics claim that the tech companies are manipulating the system to cut labor costs in an unfair way.
