Aging farm workers and a generational shift away from farm work could lead to labor shortages
The workforce of farm laborers and field workers around the United States is beginning to shrink, as workers are aging out of the labor force. In the past, many migrants from Mexico came to the United States and worked on farms around the country. The number of migrant workers decreased as the United States increased security at the US-Mexico border. Aging workers and a generational shift away from agriculture work will reduce the size of the labor force, and could potentially lead to a worker shortage. Farmers stated that with a smaller workforce, yields and the quality of crops might be lower, and produce will become more expensive.
