Alcatel-Lucent to cut 4,000 jobs
Struggling French telecom group Alcatel-Lucent is to cut a further 4,000 jobs by 2009. The firm, which is aiming to reduce costs by an extra 400 million euros, made the announcement as it reported a sharp third-quarter loss. It made a net loss of 258 million euros for the three months to 30 September. This compares with a combined profit of 523 million euros for the same period last year, when Alcatel and Lucent were still two separate companies. France's Alcatel and U.S. firm Lucent joined to form Paris-based Alcatel-Lucent in December 2006. The new job cuts come on top of the 12,500 announced in February.
