Alitalia workers reject rescue plan, pressuring Rome to step in
Alitalia workers turned down the struggling airline’s latest plan to restructure. The plan, which would cut salaries by 8 percent and eliminate 1,700 jobs, was deemed as unacceptable by workers despite unions having already agreed. Alitalia employees are already the lowest paid among European legacy airlines. Labor unions have expressed hope that shareholders or the government will avoid making decisions that could devastate the airline which, without intervention, is likely to run out of cash in the next weeks.
