American Airlines watching transport union's vote
13,000 American Airlines employees, represented by the Transport Workers Union, will begin voting this week on new contracts. The workers are covered be three proposed contracts reached in May. The three units began negotiating with the airline in June 2006 and late 2007. The National Mediation Board is looking at the outcome of the vote to decide whether or not to continue talks, or allow the unions to go on strike. The TWU says that a 'no' vote will allow them to try for a better contract, but opinion on the contracts is divided. Ballots are due by August 24, and the results will be announced that day. The pilots and flight attendants are still in negotiations with American Airlines.
