Amplats Mines Disrupted as 5,600 Workers in South Africa Strike
Several thousand workers at Anglo American Platinum Ltd., the world?s largest metal producer, went on strike Monday after the a peace agreement between rivaling unions failed. The striking workers are demanding the banishment of a rival union to the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union. The AMCU was the only union not to sign the agreement. As wage negotiations are set to begin imminently, the company hopes that the rivaling unions will be able to settle on an agreement to bring stability to its operations.
