An overview of the new labor legislation poised to take effect in California
Many labor-related bills have been passed by the California legislature recently, and the California Chamber of Commerce has coined these as "job-killers" in fear that they will negatively impact the economy. Most notably, Governor Newsom signed bills aimed at improving conditions for fast-food workers and prohibiting discrimination against employees who use cannabis off-the-job. However, there are a variety of additional bills awaiting the Governor's signature, including one that would change union election procedures for farmworkers, a state of emergency bill that would allow workers to leave unsafe workplaces, and one to extend supplemental paid sick leave related to Covid-19.
