Anglo, Xstrata Coal Units Sign Pact to Raise S. Africa Wages
South African coal companies have agreed to raise wages for entry-level workers by 5%. The wage increase is part of negotiations over a 2009-2011 wage agreement, and will go into effect as of November 1. The companies that signed the agreement are ones that have been hit directly or indirectly by unrest in South Africa's mining sector, which has cost the economy millions of dollars. The companies have agreed to increased wages in return for an end to the strikes that have effected production.
