Apple Supplier Uses Face Recognition to Screen Workers
An Apple Inc. supplier, Pegatron Corp., was implicated in the use of illegal hiring practices when a 15-year-old worker died earlier this month. The company has also been at the center of investigations concerning factory conditions and working hours. The worker was too young to be employed by Chinese law. Pegatron had been using facial recognition technology to screen for false or borrowed identification cards, but this incident shows the unreliability and holes in the system. The Fair Labor Association is still investigating the matter, but Pegatron maintains that the death is unrelated to its work terms or conditions.
