Applied Materials to cut 69 local jobs
Applied Materials Inc., a California-based nanomanufacturing company, announced plans Thursday to layoff 69 employees from it's Austin, Texas location. Cuts will begin as early as next week, though some will take place over the next year and a half. A company spokesman said that they believe these cuts will be sufficient, and they will not have to make further layoffs in Texas. However, the current cuts are also part of a larger plan announced that includes cuts at most Applied Materials locations. 100 more jobs are expected to be lost in Texas, and a total of 1,500 company-wide. The company hopes to save $450 million with these cuts, which represent almost 12% of the Applied Materials workforce.
