As demand for home care for the elderly grows, the US struggles with home health care worker shortages due to low wages
In recent years, more Americans have been choosing home care in their old age as opposed to nursing homes, but the needs for this at-home care have been exceeding the supply of home care workers. One of the reasons for this shift toward at-home caregiving has been expansions of home and community-based services through Medicaid. As a result, there has been a drop in the number of care givers to patients, which has put the elderly at risk. Additionally, home care industry jobs are not attractive, and agencies have been struggling to retain workers due to low pay and limited benefits.
