Atlantic City casino workers file appeal to ruling on smoking ban case
Atlantic City workers have appealed their case to ban smoking casinos after a lower court dismissed their case. Workers created the group Casino Employees Against Smoking Effects, and the group is seeking to ban smoking indoors in several New Jersey casinos. The group claimed that workers are entitled to the right to safety, but the lower court judge ruled that the claim was not strongly supported by labor laws. Current New Jersey law bans indoor smoking in all workplaces, expect casinos. Atlantic City casinos allow smoking on 25 percent of the casino floor, but secondhand smoke can move into other areas. Casinos state that if smoking was banned completely, revenue would decrease and casinos would have to lay off employees.
