BA Strike: Flights canceled as five-day action begins
A five-day strike by British Airways employees represented by Unite is disrupting flights. British Airways says that they will operate 60% of long flights and 50% of short flights from Heathrow, by leasing planes with crew from other carriers. An injunction preventing the strikes was overturned on appeal last Thursday, and the strike began at midnight today. After walkouts in March, British Airways took away travel perks that Unite says allowed many employees to get to work. British Airways said that they have agreed to reinstate the perks once all parts of their offer have been accepted and implemented. British Airways also blamed Unite for the failure of the talks that broke down on Saturday. Two other five-day walkouts are planned for May 30 and June 5.
