Bahrain workers face deportation over strike action
Approximately 2,000 workers in Bahrain face deportation after they engaged in what the Labour Ministry calls an illegal strike. The worker were employed at a Riffa garment factory and chose to strike over poor pay, unfair deportations, mistreatment, medical care, and terrible working conditions. Most of the workers facing deportation are Indian or Bangladeshi. The strike coincided with Bahrain Free Labour Union Federation?s attempts to unionize more than 120,000 expatriate workers inside the country, most of whom work in construction. The Indian embassy stated that management is considering the workers demanded salary of BD150 ($397) per month and said that workers have reported wages as low as BD55 ($145) per month.
