Bangladesh garment protests spread after deaths
After four protesters were killed by police in Bangladesh, garment workers across the country are protesting. The protests are over garment manufacturer's not paying workers the new minimum wage of $43 a month, which was supposed to go into effect in December. the plan was approved in July by the government and manufacturing companies. At least two factories are engaged in sit-down strikes, and others did not even open on Monday. police say that workers have blocked highways in parts of the country. The government says that it will punish manufacturers who do not pay the minimum wage, even as manufacturers ask for security against the protesters. Garment manufacturing accounts for about 80% of Bangladesh's exports, and employees over 3 million workers.
