Bangladesh Trade Was Under U.S. Review Prior to Factory Collapse
In January, the U.S. Trade Representative's office said that the lack of progress by the Bangladeshi government to address workers' rights could lead to a limitation on the country's trade benefits. The statement came after a factory fire that killed over 100 workers, but before the factory collapse that killed more than 500. Worker advocates say that changes need to be made to improve conditions in Bangladesh. Retailers who produce in Bangladesh, including Wal-Mart and J.C. Penney are also under pressure to commit to improving conditions in the factories where they produce apparel.
