BART, largest unions extend contracts to July 9
The administrators of San Francisco's BART mass transit system and two of the unions that represent the system's workers have agreed to a contract extension that would hold off a potential strike until at least July 9. Leaders of the unions ? the SEIU and the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1555 ? praised the extension as an opportunity to reach a compromise which addresses the system's need to cut its budget without crippling the benefits enjoyed by BART workers. The BART system serves approximately 355,000 riders each weekday.
