BART workers to strike after board imposes contract on second-largest union
Workers represented by the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1555 will strike Monday morning, leaving 300,000 Bay Area Commuters without station agents or train operators on their morning commute. In other words, no trains, lots of traffic. The ATU Local is one of three unions at BART, and the only one to reject the proposed contract settlement. In response, BART announced Thursday that the company would impose a harsher, one-year contract on ATU workers. It is possible that bargaining will be worked out before Monday but it is not likely - neither side seems particularly willing to budge. Many are supportive, and BARTs two other unions have agreed to respect the picket lines, but others feel that the ATU is selfish for complaining about a contract that didn't cut pay (though it did freeze it) or people.
