Bayfront project may be at standstill
Planning for a proposed $1 billion hotel and convention center in San Diego is on hold after Gaylord Entertainment and local labor unions were unable to reach an agreement, after negotiations which had stretched for nearly a year. The talks reached an impasse when unions refused to budge on a demand that all 6,500 workers involved needed for the development become union members and pay union dues. Gaylord offered to pay union wages, but didn't want contractors to have to deal directly with the unions, a condition that could raise costs for the project by $50 to $75 million, according to city officials.
