'Big-box' veto stands
Chicago's City Council members today failed to override Mayor Richard Daley's veto of the so-called 'big-box' ordinance that would have required mega-retailers in the city to pay their workers higher wages. The 31 to 18 decision was three votes short of the 34 votes needed to override the mayoral veto. Alderman Joe Moore, sponsor of the so-called Big Box Living Wage Ordinance, had introduced the measure to override Daley's veto and vowed to fight on even if it failed. "I can assure you this issue will not go away," Moore told the council.
