Big rise in working for the state
According to the Office of National Statistics, almost one in four people employed in the UK now works for the state. The number of new jobs in the public sector has risen by almost seven million, with most of the hiring being done in public administration, health and education. The rise in public employment is accompanied by a fall in manufacturing jobs, which has unions and public officials worried over a continued manufacturing recession. There are also concerns that any increase in public sector pay could increase the inflation rate.
