Bill to expand U.S. database to verify hires
One of the key features of the immigration bill taking shape on the Senate floor is that it would require all employers to use a federal electronic system to verify an employee?s legal status. The provision has gathered support from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. Critics of the system known as E-verify point to the imperfections of the database, which would exacerbate if expanded nationally. The final vote on the immigration bill could take place as early as Thursday.
