Boeing plans to cut 4,500 jobs
The Chicago-based Boeing airplane company announced today that it will cut 4,500 more jobs this year, in an effort to stay competitive and defeat the economic crisis. The company claims the cuts will allow the company to focus more intensively on development programs, airplane delivery, productivity improvement, and customer support. Most of the cuts will be made in the commercial business sector, located mainly in Seattle, rather than in areas directly connected with airplane production. The cuts are expected in the second quarter of the year ? Boeing says employees will receive 60-day notices in late February. The reductions will bring the commercial business employment total to around 63,500, approximately equivalent to the number employed at the beginning of 2008.
